The Scouts & Guides movement, one of the world’s largest non-formal educational initiatives, was founded in the early 20th century by Lord Robert Baden-Powell (B-P), a distinguished British Army officer.
B-P’s vision was both simple and revolutionary: to empower young people through practical skills, self-reliance, and a strong code of honour. The official birth of the movement is traced back to August 1907, when B-P gathered 20 boys from diverse social backgrounds for an experimental week-long camp.
This fundamental belief in “learning by doing” led to the defining “Scout Method”: working in small, self-governing teams (Patrols), achieving personal growth through earning specialized Badges, and committing to a central promise of service to others. This spark rapidly spread across the globe, establishing a movement dedicated to character development and responsible citizenship.

Teaching life skills like first aid, camping, map reading, time management, and teamwork.
The inspirational spirit of Scouting arrived in India shortly after its inception, evolving significantly alongside the nation’s history.
However, the movement was initially fragmented, with multiple organizations forming along religious and racial lines, reflecting the pre-independence era.
Following India’s independence, a crucial and unifying step was taken. In 1950, the various existing scouting organizations came together to form our sole national body: The Bharat Scouts and Guides (BSG).
The BSG stands today as one of the largest and most respected youth organizations in the nation. It is firmly dedicated to fostering patriotism, the principle of “service before self,” and national integration, uniting millions of young Indians under one flag for the betterment of society.
The respected scholars and leaders of Jamiat Ulema Hind (JUH) recognized a powerful and timely synergy between their commitment to character development and the proven methodology of Scouting. They saw that the core tenets of the ScoutsDuty, Honour, and Service (Khidmat) were perfectly aligned with the timeless Islamic values of discipline, community welfare, and moral excellence.
This recognition led to a pivotal decision: to formally adopt the Scouts & Guides framework to constructively channel the immense potential and energy of young individuals towards nation-building.
